On
February 2, the legislature held its first ever public hearing on a
bill to address the growing influence of big money in elections and a
bill to require disclosure of financial interests by legislators. After
hearing no testimony in opposition, however, the Senate State Affairs
Commitee rejected the bills. Even though
they have been adopted in other states, a majority of Idaho's lawmakers
apparently believe Idahoans do not want this kind of openness &
accountability in their election and legislative process.

According to a report by the Idaho Center on Democracy and Open Government, during the last election cycle special interests spent over $2.5 million to influence the outcome of elections. Each of these groups has a stake in what happens at the state legislature. Each of these groups believes their campaign contribution will at the very least provide with access to elected officials. Each of these groups feel they need to “Pay to Play.” (see graph).
